Asteroid Aphrodite

To understand the meaning of asteroid Aphrodite in our natal chart we must look at her myth, archetype, and correspondences to understand how we can work with her as a deity for healing. We think of Aphrodite as the Greek Goddess of love, but don’t expect fidelity, for she is more about fleeting desires. Aphrodite has connections with Astarte and Ishtar, which are a lot more spicy than the seemingly demur paintings of Aphrodite. This most famous love goddess was born out of sky-god Uranus’s discarded genitals, so she had quite a violent start!

Aphrodite is the Greek version of Roman Venus and the patron goddess of prostitutes, sex, beauty, lust, pleasure and passion. Although Aphrodite had around twenty children, she is not particularly associated with fertility, whereas Venus is. Aphrodite’s main festival is Aphrodisia, which connects to aphrodisiacs, the foods that make you horny.

Aphrodite Archetype

As stated, Aphrodite wasn’t faithful, so commitment or marriage was an anathema to her. Instead, this Goddess is the courtesan, fun fling and mistress. However, Aphrodite wasn’t to be messed with either. The Goddess bestowed great gifts upon those who honoured her yet dispensed severe punishments to those who dared to disrespect her, often with considerable brutality. Aphrodite, along with Eris, the Goddess of Discord, were instrumental in causing the Trojan War. Aphrodite promised Helen of Troy as a prize to Paris if he judged her to be the most beautiful (As written on Eris’s golden apple). The catch was that Helen was already married to the king of Sparta!

Aphrodite is mischievous, fun and flirty. I wouldn’t work with her alone to find long-term committed love or start a family, but she is THE Goddess for the art of seduction. Aphrodite is great for attracting a man into your life. Her powerful glamour magic can hook many potential suitors in, but it’s also an exceedingly cat-fishing type of energy. Don’t let the Goddess of beauty go overboard with the lashes, filters and fillers!

So, what kind of love do we mean when we think of Goddess Aphrodite? It’s the kind of passionate love that adores things. Like “I LOVE chocolate, Gucci, Art Deco… “. Whatever fad you have going on at the moment. It’s a worshipping type of love that puts things on pedestals. But it’s a love that also relies on aesthetics and perfection. Aphrodite, being the Goddess of beauty, can’t abide ugliness. It’s all about having the perfect facial features and fabulous body. But Aphrodite also wants to make the world gorgeous and harmonious. The irony, of course, is that avoiding conflict can sometimes cause the opposite. Aphrodite’s sugarcoating and little white lies can mean it is a shock when the truth finally comes out. The kick-back can often be shockingly violent. (See Trojan War)
