Venus square or opposition Mars is a passionate and driven aspect, but since it is a hard connection it can also be quite cruel and ruthless. Under normal circumstances, Venus will soothe Mars and Mars will push a lazy Venus into taking action, but as I found in my research, there was a wide spectrum in how these two play out in reality.
The square for some reason seems to yield far more success, especially in the field of entertainment. This aspect will be both sexy and charming which is irresistible to an audience. The natives will have a great passion for their art and will have the magnetism to easily attract benefactors.
The malefic or the benefic possibility of this hard aspect all depends on which signs the planets are in. With Vivien Leigh, you can see that Venus is clearly softening Mars since it is more powerful in Libra squaring a Mars in Cancer. A great example of the opposite effect is Marquis De Sade with Mars in Aries overpowering the square to Venus in Cancer.
However, looking deeper at Vivien Leigh, her great exterior beauty (Venus) and butter-wouldn’t-melt aura betrays an inner turmoil. Leigh was notoriously difficult to work with and suffered from bi-polar disorder. Leigh was often not taken seriously as an actress due to her looks. Director George Cukor described Leigh as a “consummate actress, hampered by beauty” ~ wiki.
These subjects can make money from their physique whether it is through sports prowess, sexuality or sheer good looks. They can also be fantastic campaigner and politicians as their rousing speeches will ignite a crowd into taking action on important issues.
“I swing between happiness and misery. I am part prude and part nonconformist. ” ~ Vivien Leigh
The huge difference in famous people with the square compared to the opposition leads me to think the opposition is much harder to deal with. Maybe it was the case that I just hadn’t heard of many on the list, maybe these folk were more successful in business, sports or the military rather than in sciences, arts or entertainment. But I have not seen such a stark difference in both aspects in all my research so this is significant in itself.
KEYWORDS: Crimes of passion, shotgun wedding, femme fatale, extra-marital affairs, crude love, the battle of the sexes, S & M, love competition, fighting for money, spicy affairs, love-bombing, sexual jealousy…
With the opposition, it is almost as if the native is so at war with themselves that they are too exhausted to put energy into other projects. I also found the square aspect turn up in many soulmate Davison charts examples. They seemed to be relationships that were very karmic or star-crossed with many obstacles to overcome to be together.
Venus in hard aspect to Mars is always going to be very bitter-sweet and can have a Sadomasochistic side, but more especially with Mars in Scorpio or Aries. At best this is a fertile and sexy aspect which ages very well, like a fine wine. The wayward impulsivity of youth is refined and the hard edges polished with time and experience.
“It is always by way of pain one arrives at pleasure… the only way to a woman’s heart is along the path of torment.” ~ Marquis De Sade
