Mercury Pluto aspects are the ultimate in top-secret research and spell-making. This is the aspect of powerful words, propaganda and secret societies like the Freemasons. Singer Kate Bush, who has Mercury conjunct Pluto, even wrote a song about this theme;
Experiment IV “tells a story about a secret military plan to create a sound that is horrific enough to kill people…. in the music video nearly every person working on the project is killed by the horrific sound, which is personified by Bush herself as she changed from an angelic woman into a banshee”

Words have such importance that they are life-or-death. Mercury Pluto aspects can be associated with being hushed up or threatened if you dare speak out. Blackmail is possible with this aspect too. There is a great obsession with solving mysteries and uncovering the truth no matter how deeply buried it is.
Mercury conjunction, square or opposition Pluto in the sky brings conspiracy and intrigue. Use this time to get to the bottom of any mysterious goings on in your life. You could be drawn to connecting with loved ones who have recently passed. If you should seek a medium or shaman under this influence it is critical to keep grounded. The occult holds a fascination, but be careful of rabbit holes Alice!
The subject will risk their life in order to solve a crime. This is the aspect of murder mysteries and whodunnits. Mercury Pluto aspects never takes information at face value, to them everything is a conspiracy. They are fantastic at being able to ferret out another’s personal thoughts to the smallest detail while never giving away anything about themselves. Of course, this makes a great detective inspector or journalist.

Mercury Pluto aspects looks at the taboo which can bring censorship. Kate Bush’s video was actually banned from Top Of The Pops for being too violent. Of course, both Madonna and Miley Cyrus have been banned for lewdness at times in their careers, while the Italian astronomer Galileo was kept under house-arrest for daring to say the earth wasn’t the centre of the Universe. All these Mercury conjunct Pluto folk have offended those in power for going further into Pluto’s pit then they should have done.
Mercury trine or sextile Pluto in the sky is terrific for developing intuition. A good time to get out your tarot cards and see what stories they tell. Keep note of synchronicities and any wild hunches no matter how crazy. Mercury is speaking loud and clear and the soft aspects are generally trustworthy and unchallenging. Try to tame the monkey mind with meditation and mantras. Repetitive drum and base could be very healing and bring to the surface trapped muscle trauma for release.
It is interesting there are quite a few famous drummers in the examples below as Mercury is hands and Pluto can be very primal. The banging of the shamanic drum can connect us to our ancestors and open a portal (Mercury) into other dimensions. There is certainly something very supernatural about Mercury Pluto aspects as Mercury could travel between worlds and wore Pluto’s helmet of invisibility.
Mercury is also the trickster, so words can be lies. Mercury Pluto aspects may be excellent at sorcery and make a great hypnotist. Since Mercury is associated with medicine it can heal and resurrect someone from near death (Pluto). This healing may be done by singing or shamanic drum transmissions. It’s not gentle healing though, more piercing and purging. Funnily enough the singers below do have quite ‘wailing banshee’ type voices, more arresting than calming. (Bush can do both!)
Stigmata & Sorcery
I found out that Padre Pio Of Pietrelcina is a great example of this archetype. This saint festoons the walls of most of my Sicilian relative’s houses so I thought I’d find out what the deal was with him. Padre Pio is most famous for bearing the stigmata, the permanent, bleeding wounds of Christ’s crucifixion in the palms of his hands. (Mercury). As a child Pio slept on a stone floor with a rock as a pillow and according to his parents was able to speak with Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
Mercury rules medicine and Padre Pio’s health was an issue for most of his life. He suffered insomnia, fainting spells and severe migraines. The pain of these illnesses seems to have brought on out-of-body experiences for Pio. Friars in his company had reported seeing him levitate off the ground in a state of ecstasy.
Despite his ill health Padre Pio lived to the age of 81 and it was for the last 50 years of his life that he received the sign of the stigmata. The wounds only healed up once, but were constant. Physicians could not explain them as the wounds never became infected and smelt of perfume or flowers.
Padre Pio suffered constant pain from the stigmata, but was accused of faking his wounds with carbolic acid. “According to Agostino Gemelli, Padre Pio was “an ignorant and self-mutilating psychopath who exploited people’s credulity.” ~ Wiki. The church was initially skeptical of Padre Pio’s supernatural abilities, but after his death, Pio was made a saint.
During Pio’s lifetime he received visions, communicated with angels and supposedly gave sight to a blind Sicilian girl. “Padre Pio believed the love of God is inseparable from suffering….He felt that his soul was lost in a chaotic maze, plunged into total desolation, as if he were in the deepest pit of hell.” Padre Pio’s followers believed their Padre was being constantly attacked by the devil who used “used diabolical tricks in order to increase Padre Pio’s torments.”
