Pluto ~ Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, & Gen Z

In this series I look the Pluto generations against the backdrop of politics and power players. The videos go into more detail but here are my notes for reference:

The Silent Generation ~ 1928 to 1945

Pluto at 16º Cancer to 10º Leo (Sidereal Gemini/Cancer)

1929/1930 ~ Castor. Good twin
1931/1934 ~ Pollux (Speaking out about taboo/dark subject matter) Hitler’s rise to power
1934/37 ~ Procyon (Announcer star) TV/radio propaganda

1941/45 ~ Praesaepe. The bee-hive cluster. Hive mind. Spirit of the ancestors

The Silent Generation: “It is unclear where the term originated, although it is widely accepted that the term “Silent Generation” comes from the focus on careers over activism. As young adults during the McCarthy Era, many members of the Silent Generation felt it was dangerous to speak out.” ~Wiki

“They have also been named the “Lucky Few” in the 2008 book The Lucky Few: Between the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boom Elwood D. Carlson PhD, Carlson notes that this was the first generation in American history to be smaller than the generation that preceded them. He calls the people of this generation “The Lucky Few”, because even though they were born during the Great Depression and World War II, they moved into adulthood during the relatively prosperous 1950s and early 1960s.” ~Wiki

Baby Boomers: “As a group, baby boomers were the wealthiest, most active, and most physically fit generation up to the era in which they arrived, and were amongst the first to grow up genuinely expecting the world to improve with time. They were also the generation that received peak levels of income; they could therefore reap the benefits of abundant food, clothing, retirement programs, and sometimes even “midlife crisis” products. The increased consumerism of this generation has often been criticized as excessive. In the west, baby boomers comprised the first generation to grow up with the television” ~Wiki

“The boomers have tended to think of themselves as a special generation, very different from preceding and following generations. In the 1960s, as the relatively large numbers of young people became teenagers and young adults, they, and those around them, created a very specific rhetoric around their cohort, and the changes they were bringing about.” ~ Wiki

Generation X: Generation Xers “were children during a time of shifting societal values and as children were sometimes called the “latchkey generation”, due to reduced adult supervision as children compared to previous generations, a result of increasing divorce rates and increased maternal participation in the workforce, prior to widespread availability of childcare options outside the home. As adolescents and young adults, they were dubbed the “MTV Generation” (a reference to the music video channel of the same name).” ~Wiki

“In the 1990s they were sometimes characterized as slackers, cynical and disaffected. Some of the cultural influences on Gen X youth were the musical genres of grunge and hip hop music, and indie films. In midlife, research describes them as active, happy, and achieving a work–life balance. The cohort has been credited with entrepreneurial tendencies.  Generation X as a “dark horse demographic” which “doesn’t seek the limelight”. Gordiner cited examples of Gen Xers’ contributions to society such  as: Google, Wikipedia, Amazon.com and YouTube, arguing if Boomers had created them, “we’d never hear the end of it”. ~Wiki

Millennials ~ 1980 to 1996*

Millennials: are sometimes referred to as “echo boomers” due to a major surge in birth rates in the 1980s and 1990s, and because millennials are often the children of the baby boomers… “Generation Me”. Twenge attributes millennials with the traits of confidence and tolerance, but also describes a sense of entitlement and narcissism, based on personality surveys showing increased narcissism among millennials compared to preceding generations when they were teens and in their twenties.” ~Wiki

They are said to have “increasingly social liberal views, as well as higher overall support for classical liberal economic policies than preceding generations. They are more likely to support same-sex marriage and the legalization of drugs….attitudes are more supportive of social liberal policies and same-sex marriage relative to other demographics.” ~Wiki

Also named as the “Peter Pan generation, because of the members’ perceived tendency for delaying some rites of passage into adulthood for longer periods than most generations before them. These labels were also a reference to a trend toward members living with their parents for longer periods than previous generations.” ~Wiki This is also the generation that spawned the “NEETS”

Generation Z: “First to grow up with smart phones & social media. Since the oldest members were not yet cognisant when the 9/11 attacks occurred, there is no generational memory of a time the United States was not at war with the loosely defined forces of global terrorism….a feeling of unsettlement and insecurity among the people of Generation Z with the environment in which they were being raised. The economic recession of 2008 is particularly important to historical events that have shaped Generation Z, due to the ways in which their childhoods may have been affected by the recession’s shadow; that is, the financial stresses felt by their parents.” ~Wiki

They are a strait-laced bunch compared to their predecessors “generation Z youth had lower teen pregnancy rates, less substance abuse, and higher on-time high school graduation rates compared with Millennials. The researchers compared teens from 2008 and 2014 and found a 40% drop in teen pregnancy, a 38% drop in drug and alcohol abuse, and a 28% drop in the percentage of teens who did not graduate on time from high school.” ~Wiki

“Research conducted in 2017 reports that the social media usage patterns of this generation may be associated with loneliness, anxiety, and fragility …more conservative, more money-oriented, more entrepreneurial and pragmatic about money compared with Millennials”….. are more conservative than Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers with respect to marijuana legalization, transgender issues and same sex marriage.” ~Wiki
