The Myth of Isis and Osiris
Let’s examine the mythology of Isis and her consort Osiris. Osiris, the god of the afterlife and resurrection, was betrayed by his jealous brother Set, who dismembered his brother’s body into 14 pieces and scattered them across the earth. Isis embarked on a tireless quest to recover her husband’s remains. Her dedication and intuition enabled her to find 13 of the 14 pieces. Isis magically recreated the vital missing member, Osiris’s phallus. She breathed life back into a resurrected Osiris, enabling him to even father a son, Horus. This myth underscores Isis’s role as a mother, magician, and protector of the dead.
Mother and Protector
Isis’s role as a mother extends beyond her relationship with Horus. She is often depicted as a nurturing figure, embodying the qualities of motherhood, fertility, and the protection of children. Her image, frequently depicted nursing Horus, became a powerful symbol of maternal care and protection and eventually evolved into Christian Mother Mary with baby Jesus over time. Isis is the guardian of life and, in common with Greek Persephone, symbolizes the cycle of birth, growth, and resurrection.
As the protector of the dead, Isis is often invoked in funerary rituals, where her protective powers guide and safeguard the deceased soul on their journey to the afterlife. Her role in the resurrection of Osiris underscores her ability to transcend the boundaries between life and death, offering hope and continuity beyond mortal existence.
