Black Moon Lilith

Black Moon Lilith is the most commonly used Lilith out of the Three Lilith’s and is the lunar apogee. The Lunar apogee is a point in space where the moon is furthest from the earth. It is a dark new moon, the darkest it can be! Conversely the Lunar perigee, is the opposite point, when the moon is closest to the earth and classed as a super moon. The brightest Full Moon that can be. So you get the point, the Black Moon is literally DARK.

The Dark Goddess archetype as a whole is associated with sex magic, death, obsession, addiction, transformation, resurrection, magic, the occult and all things taboo. Black Moon Lilith is the birth-canal between the spiritual dimension (or underworld) and life on the physical plane. Lilith, after Persephone, is probably the best-known dark Goddess in the West.

The Black Moon Archetype

Lilith is famously about sex, but not in the same way as Mars and Venus. (Ie: For courting and procreation.) Instead, Lilith is about the power and psychology of sex. Black Moon Lilith is connected with sex as enlightenment through the Kundalini awakening also. With Lilith then, sex is a powerful weapon, and that is why certain religions wanted to have total control of it.

FGM is a graphic example of literally cutting out the sacred pleasure centre for women. The vilest manifestation of Lilith is paedophilia, incest and satanic ritual abuse. Again this mirrors the abduction and rape of fellow Dark Goddess Persephone by her much older uncle Pluto. Black Moon Lilith was also birthed into consciousness in 1930, the same time as pornography started to become more accessible to the masses due to the invention of movies and photography.

The Serpent & Genetics

Reproduction is vital to eugenicists. It is through selective breeding that certain bloodlines and ethnic groups succeed or die out. Women are, therefore, the gatekeepers to the next generation as they choose (Unless raped) whether they will breed with a particular man or not.

Men see themselves as the natural defenders of the next generation, and part of the patriarch’s duty is to ensure their genes are passed down through the holy grail of their women. Therefore, it is the nature of the male to ensure that his female is not ‘abducted’ and impregnated by the genes of a man from outside his tribe. Lilith’s “forbidden fruit” then could also describe what the serpent stands for.

The serpent symbol looks very much like the double helix of the DNA. Mercury/Hermes, the logo for the medical profession, also holds a caduceus, two serpents intertwined, the symbol of DNA and genetic engineering. Back to Persephone and Pluto again. Lilith is the eugenicist, so the ‘forbidden fruit’ could be the control over breeding. Some say the serpent’s forbidden knowledge is genetics and that humans are part star-child, part human hybrids. Whatever the case, Lilith connects to the creation myth, genes, aliens, evolution and taboo subjects such as race.

Trauma-based mind control through sexual torture is another area connected with Lilith. The dark dungeon of the underworld is often filled with pain and abuse. Lilith was also said to be a hermaphrodite, so she was both a succubus and an incubus.  Lilith is associated with deviancy and the blurring of gender. Lilith sex can be taboo or push through boundaries. It tends not to be about procreation. ‘Baby-killing’ is associated with Lilith because the more developed and educated a society becomes, the fewer children a woman has.

Lilith and The Night

Since the Black Moon Lilith version in astrology is not a solid planet revolving around a central sun, this puts its meaning into a very grey area. The regular Moon rules the memory, the imagination and dreams. Fairytales, myths, dreams, and surrealist art all speak to us through this right brain, which is an unconscious symbolic language.

Lilith is the place in our psyche where our primal instincts lie. It is also the home of our darkest demons, the ones that desperately need to be channelled creatively. There is great danger that these gremlins can become self-destructive, harmful, and toxic to others if not transmuted into an artistic product. Lilith is the darkness inside ourselves where we feel haunted by something we can’t quite pinpoint. This energy does not do well when used for selfish desires. It needs purging and safe release out into the collective. Lilith’s dark, absorbing nature lends it to attaching the negative projections of human emotions.

Collective trauma wounds are said to encircle the Earth’s vibrational energy field like black smog. We see expressions of Lilith’s archetype in fairytales. Witches, owls, sprites, magicians, dragons, and mysterious creatures appeal to children and adults still in touch with this primal, mythical world. The rise of Harry Potter is a Lilith phenomenon. When Lilith was in exile, she took the form of an owl. Lilith’s vengeful destruction stemmed from the loss of her own children. Lilith’s ‘babies’ can also serve as a metaphor for creativity when our artistic creations have been seized and the opportunity for creative expression has been withheld.

Lilith The Vampire

Greek and Roman mythology has Lilith as a Lamia; these were sorcerers who sucked the blood of living people. So Lilith becomes a vampire. Lamia was also known as the “child killer” and instilled fear due to her malicious nature, similar to Lilith. Her origins are varied and conflicting, and she is depicted as having a human upper body from the waist up, while her lower half is serpentine in form. Lamia had an insatiable sexual appetite that matched her cannibalistic hunger for children.

The pre-raphaelites paint a far less fearsome picture of Lilith. Rossetti depicts her brushing her long hair. A beautiful Lilith is seated surrounded by poppies, symbolizing death, and white roses, which are supposed to represent sterile passion. In recent times, the demonic side of Lilith is downplayed, and she is seen more as a femme fatale and sex goddess. Lilith is revered as a priestess by modern witchcraft or, more negatively, as the wife of Satan by Satanists.

Lilith & Childhood

“Rather than withering away in exile, the Lilith shadow grows and flourishes in the same way that she was prolific in breeding demonic offspring on the shores of the Red Sea. When this aspect of Lilith’s shadow is active in our lives, our psyche becomes overwhelmed with images of revenge and retaliation. When the shadow inevitably erupts and violently breaks through our boundaries of constraint, she unleashes the terror of her vengeance.” Demetra George. Mysteries of the Dark Moon 1992

The other connection with children is the word Lullaby. “The name is from Assyrian lay’la, Hebrew Lil (night), which already in Accadian meant sorcery. It probably personified the darkness that soothed children to slumber, and the word Lullaby has been derived from Lilith Abi.” Grace Ellery Williams. So, Lullabys were initially sung to protect children from the threat of Lilith taking them while they slept! I found this quote on a religious website blaming SIDs on Lilith. “The word “lullaby” is thought to derive from an incantation designed to repel her……Take precaution by cleaning out your homes and your baby’s room of those abominable things (night lamps made like an owl, elves, smurfs, fairies, etc. Toys can carry many evil powers, and which have been dedicated to a false god.”~ demonbuster.com

Owls & Predators

Lilith can also signify a stolen childhood (through abuse) or children abducted (Again, this connects with the myth of Persephone. The fact that a giant owl sculpture is part of the scenery at Bohemian Grove is unnerving. Owls are associated with human sacrifice. The symbolism of owls in association with elite groups is frequently observed, particularly in their predatory actions towards children. Indeed, this is abhorrent. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that the owl also symbolizes wisdom, and much like the serpent, it encompasses both positive and negative connotations.

Lilith has a Sado/Masochistic tone; this would be emphasized with any aspects of Pluto, making it even more dangerous. Self-destructiveness through the use of drugs is a great temptation, like the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. With Lilith, however, if one uses its energy creatively and with care, sacred herbs can be used in a shamanic way to unlock the demons festering in the collective consciousness. The use of psychedelics in the 60s inspired an explosion of music and art, which was cathartic for some, but it should not become a habit, and that’s where the dangers with black Moon Lilith lie!

True & Mean Versions Of Lilith

Originally in my Lilith aspect posts I listed and took note of both True Lilith and Mean Lilith aspects, but I realised that I was muddying the waters of Lilith and decided to settle with the True Lilith after years of using both. The early use of the lunar apogee started around one hundred years ago before we had computers.

In those days was easier then to average out the movement of the lunar apogee and use its Mean position to avoid wild inaccuracies. In the 1990’s, ephemerides for the True position came out which means we can now use true Lilith with accuracy. We can observe that true Lilith constantly whizzes back and forth, is retrograde a lot of the time and can deviate as much as 30º from the mean position.

True Lilith is also known as osculating Lilith. Osculate means ‘kiss’ or ‘little mouth’ in Latin. Interestingly the only other planet that osculates in this same fashion (albeit at a much slower pace) is Eris, who retrogrades back and forth so much, that it takes her 5 to 8 years to cross one degree of the zodiac. I have come to the conclusion then, that the so-called ‘True Lilith’ is the only one true Lilith. The True Lilith version of the Black Moon, with its wild, hard-to-tame and sometimes subversive behavior, is more authentic to the core meaning of Lilith.
