Full Moon July 2011 – Mermaids & Lyres

The Full Moon on July 15 is at 22 degrees Capricorn. It falls on fixed star Sulaphat in the Lyre and squares Eris. It is quite timely this Goddess comes up since she featured so heavily in my research into psychopaths. I think she may represent is the scapegoat, she did get blamed for the Trojan war after all.  Like Eris, psychopaths take the rap for all our inner demons, we can brand someone a psycho and smugly feel good about ourselves.

But the question that bothered me was. Why? Why does nature dish out predators and parasites within the human species? The discovery of Eris has helped us spot and study them, but what is the difference between Eris and Pluto? What is it about her that pushes us even further into the demonic pit?

Well its actually very simple, it’s because Eris is a female and bears children. Eris has a similar feel to Kali the angry mother archetype. As long as the evils of the world are represented by the ruthless male god Pluto, women and enlightened “Feminine” men can distance themselves from the Plutonic bloodshed and say it has nothing to do with them. But as I said at the end of the last eclipse post “Maybe this is the birth of recognizing how we polarize and demonize our shadow selves. This eclipse could herald the start of a journey to real understanding of the “evil” twin that lives inside of all of us.”

So with the full Moon on lyre-playing Nero’s rising star, Sulaphat, we have to ask ourselves, do we fiddle while Rome burns? As long as we think that the darkside has nothing to do with us, that all we have to do is sprinkle fairy dust and bathe the baddies in white light then nothing will change. To quote Einstein “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
We also have the Pluto trine Jupiter which is the backdrop to all of this. This is big wealth and multi-millionaires, but the Pluto arm of this trine has religious groups and the morality brigade (Neptune/Chiron) bearing down on it. Big business must be seen to be ethical.

The News Of the World in the uk has already been scrapped due to phone hacking scandals. But I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. The gutter press all over will be quaking in their boots now. I’m sure The News Of The world is not the only unscrupulous paper here and there will be resentment from its sacked workers if it is allowed to become the scapegoat.

Eris is all about speaking out against injustice, so the hypocritical behaviour of the elite will continue to be exposed by this square. Interestingly Mars is exactly conjunct the fixed star Rigel in Orion. This star is in the foot of our hero who boasted he could slay all the animals on earth. Gaia the earth goddess sent a scorpion to bring this arrogant God down a peg with it’s deadly sting. This is the common man bringing down an institution. So the stinging theme from the Lesath lunar eclipse continues!

The Gemini influence from the Alhena Solar Eclipse continues also as the Sun is on the tricky evil twin Pollux. The card I picked was the 7 of swords representing Lepus the hare which happens to sit directly under Orion the hunter in the sky which connects us back to Mars on Rigel. The hare is another trickster god, like the twins, this one likes to duck and dive, in and out of the nocturnal shadows. The hare is sacred to Hekate the goddess of the thresholds and very much a lunar type. Orion who appears to chase this Hare is most definitely the solar type. These two constellations also show the dance of opposites a mere satellite bringing down a star? Why does the mighty Orion even concern himself with such minions? But Orion was brought down by a mere creature before, as I have just recounted. Once bitten twice shy. The card suggests during the next two weeks to keep your wits about you and use your cunning, do not underestimate the little person.

There is also a Oceanic flavour to this moon too. It is conjunct minor Asteroids Eunike (a sea nymph) and Asteroid Venetia (The famous Italian “City Of Water” Venice). Most important I think is its opposition Varuna named after a Hindu sea-god and classified as a TNO. This makes it a trans-neptunian, which to me sound like some sort of aquatic crossdresser…but anyhow.

Varuna has the huge awesomeness of a whale, it’s presence all knowing, all seeing in the background, we can feel the power of a sea change, the tides slowly pulling, but we are hypnotized, the waves rocking and lulling us into a false sense of security and then wooaaahhh the delightful mermaid is sucking us down down relentlessly, all because we didn’t keep to our word or honour a contract. Varuna is said to punish liars. The trickster might be able to wriggle out of agreements on dry land quite easily, but the hare doesn’t stand a chance in the deep blue.

So there are quite a few elements at play here, but the key player is Eris, who as we can see is just about conjunct True Lilith also. Together they are pulling the strings of the titanic Varuna whale and the romantic Venetian Moon, all this while playing the lyre and floating on a gondola. Beautiful, I wish I was there… But hey wakey, wakey, can Eris mediate anything fairly or is she going to rock the Gondola and poke the whale just for fun?

As I said right at the beginning, Eris is apt to be made into a scapegoat. But she doesn’t do herself any favours by forever playing the joker and hoping the universe will read something meaningful out of her puzzles. Eris has been unexpectedly passed the reins of power and this is a golden opportunity to show the world what she is made of. This Full Moon could herald a time where projects that were originally thought way too “out there” suddenly find their time and are deemed to totally fit requirements.
