The fourth house in astrology is associated with the home, family (specifically the father) and property. In horary astrology, the 4th house is known as the ‘end of the matter’ but more specifically if the IC point is positioned there. (In whole sign houses it might not be found here however). The fourth is the lowest point of the chart below the horizon. It is an important, foundational and angular house.
The 4th house and sign of Cancer is associated with parents and nurturing. The 4th house is your ‘safe space’ since it is the most private place of the horoscope. It is a zone of sanctuary, where you feel you most belong. This sector rules the homestead and represents the land of your ancestors.
William Lilly says of the fourth house;
“Giveth judgement of fathers in general and ever of his father that enquires, or that is born; of lands, houses, tenements, inheritances, tillage of the earth, treasures hidden, the determination or end of anything; towns, cities or castles, besieged or not besieged; all ancient dwellings, gardens, fields, pastures, orchards; the quality and nature of the…..grounds one purchaseth, whether vineyards, cornfield..
It ruleth the breast, lungs. Of colours, the red: Its co-significator is Cancer, and of planets the Sun; we call it the Angle of the Earth, or Immum Coeli; it is feminine, and the North Angle: In Nativities or Questions, this fourth house represents fathers, if the Sun be herein placed… shows the father to be of a noble disposition.””
Planets In 4th House Meaning ~ Transits
Sun Transit 4th House
The Sun transiting the 4th House stresses connecting with your roots. Your home and personal territory become really important and the tendency to look inward while spending time in your home sanctuary is something your soul is crying out for at this time. If you own your home outright then you might want to focus on making it more secure or creating a ‘safe space’ within it, away from noisier family members. It benefits your health to honour ancestral lineage, if your immediate family seem alien to you, maybe you can feel grounded by looking back in time.
You seek refuge in the bosom of the family and may feel like you need to spend time with parents or relatives. If there has been some dysfunction between family members in the past it is vital to spend some time healing those childhood wounds. The root of the injury may stem from a few generations back and it could be that revising the history of that time period can be instrumental in rewiring the brain into a more positive path for growth. This is an excellent time for making peace in domestic situations and repairing trauma.
Moon Transit & Full Moon in 4th House
The Moon transiting the 4th House is one of the most emotionally draining lunation’s of the year as its position opens up long-buried family skeletons for you. The natural thing to do (as you regress to the mental state of a 3-year-old), is to want to cocoon yourself in bed. There wrap up in the fluffiest duvet you can get hold of for protection for this is Moon/Womb time par excellence. Don’t bother to push yourself out of your comfort zone as you will act out the most crankiest PMT monster to your loved ones ever.
Moon in the 4th house will open up a can of psychological worms for you. Keep away from anyone that presses your infantile buttons and brats in general, as things could turn very ugly, very quickly. Avoid trolling type internet activity also, as again, you will seem to attract comments that echo your parents worst criticisms of you. You won’t be able to deal with anything in an objective matter at all for the next two weeks. If you are lucky enough to have dream parents then go home and let them cook for you. Heaven!!
