Stephen Harper is contesting the May 2 2011 Canadian Federal Election as leader of the Conservative Party. Harper is the current prime minister, winning the last election with 38% of the popular vote. The Conservative Party is right wing, with influence from the Evangelical movement.
We have no time of birth for Harper so the chart below is set for noon. The most strongly aspected planet is Mercury, with a conjunction to the South Node, square to Mars and trine to Uranus. Mercury square Mars could get him into may arguments, making it difficult for him to maintain allegiances. I just read through his Wikipedia page and this trait seems to be very strong. I lost count of how many different political parties he has been involved in. Mercury trine Uranus could also explain this tendency to keep thinking ahead, looking for new ways to a assert his Mars desires.
Harper has shown that pioneering thinking, and Mercury on the fixed star Alpheratz does suggest that, “pioneer work bringing prominence“, and Robson says Mercury with Alpheratz also gives “benefits from judges, lawyers or churchmen” [1]. The religious vote is iimportant for Harper, some critics have suggested he has fashioned his campaigning on that of the Tea Party Movement in America.
Harper opposes same-sex marriage, he withdrew funding of abortions in Canada’s G8 health plan, and has used public money to fund private religious colleges. He is a member of the evangelical Christian and Missionary Alliance. Mercury with Alphertaz can also lead to selfish motives, and with natal Jupiter (religion) square Pluto (big time politics) we can see the conflict, personal religious beliefs having an influence on the masses through power politics.
The January solar eclipse was square his Mercury, and the April new moon was conjunct his Mercury, still in effect for election day. On election day, Venus is conjunct his Mercury, and Saturn is opposite it. Boy will he be talking! All these things hitting his Mercury may be a positive, will be getting his message across, but they also trigger his natal Mercury square Mars which is not so good. Possibility of saying the wrong thing, offending people, frustration and irritation leading to arguments or tantrums.
A major long term influence comes from transiting Pluto, which is conjunct his Saturn. Robert hand says that this is a very stressful transit where change comes after much resistance and many difficulties. “you are forced to hold onto to something for dear life or to persist in some task or project in the face of energies that are trying to make you give up…In the face of this pressure it is often better to surrender than to take a hard line and hold on. Whatever is being challenged usually needs to change, and you will gain little by holding on, except to delay the inevitable” [2].
Harper has Saturn on the fixed star Facies. Adolf Hitler had Moon conjunct this star. Brady says that Facies “represents the penetrating stare of a lethal weapon. It is one of the most difficult, and possibly the most violent, objects in the heavens. It gives a penetration of action that has no regard for others…Facies in a chart will indicate that the planet it touches will be very focused and driven…the push to achieve goals and aims may well become ruthless” [3]. So Harper is going to be persistent and determined to hold onto power, he will do anything it takes.

I live in Canada and Stephen Harper has the definite feel of a man without a conscience and a dictator in waiting. There is move to try and unseat him with strategic voting. How does that project look in our Canadian chart?
That’s the feeling I got when looking at his chart too. Saturn square the Canada Sun I thought meant “a real test for the current leader”, but with hindsight I would say it meant fear of change.
