Asteroids

Asteroids & Minor PlanetsAsteroids are used in astrology to fine tune themes brought up in the natal chart and also in synastry and mundane astrology. When using asteroids the orbs must be very tight, I would say not more than a 1.5 degree orb, otherwise you are in danger of completely diluting the chart and not seeing the forest for the trees. The next filter is to determine if they are conjunct or opposite the Sun, Moon or the Ascendant. We would also consider a tight trine or square. If they complete an aspect pattern then this is also important. If you find yourself strongly attracted to a mythical figure it is worth looking up the asteroid name and see if it features strongly in your chart.

We consider Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Chiron and the Black Moon Lilith to be exempt from the above rules and they are given more weight at Darkstar Astrology. The rest of the asteroids and minor planets are loosely categorized into three sets:

• Main Belt Asteroids, the Greco-Romans between Mars and Jupiter like Juno and Vesta.
Trans-Neptunians (TNO’s), not all technically asteroids and some large enough to be minor planets like Sedna and Orcus.
Centaurs, all small TNO’s like Pholus and Nessus, except Chiron who orbits between Saturn and Uranus and is actually classified as a comet.

Finding Asteroids in Your Chart

1. Create your free chart at astro.com HERE.
2. Choose “Extended Chart Selection”.
3. Select everything in the “Additional objects” box. This will show the major asteroids in your chart.
4. If you have a particular asteroid in mind that is not in that additional objects box, then under that you will find a box called “additional asteroids or hypothetical planets”. Find the number of the asteroid you want from this Asteroid name/number List and add it to the box.

5. Yet another option is to use Serennu to list over 1000 asteroids in your chart. Remember to use UT for your time of birth, select “sort by degrees of the zodiac“, add the coordinates of your birth place, then select “Include first 1,000 asteroids“.

The Meanings of Asteroids in Astrology

The Wikipedia Asteroid Name Meanings Page lists all the known asteroids by number with links to the deity, person or place they were named after. Asteroids are like the saints, you can pray to them and meditate on them to inspire and ignite your own intuition about how to read your chart. Don’t take the myths too literally, they are a base from which to explore. It’s important to also consider the personality of the planetary body through it’s orbit, appearance and it’s discovery chart as well as the myth behind it.  I would suggest browsing through Zane Stein for the TNO’s, Juan Antonio Revilla and Zsuzsanna Griga for Centaurs.

If you would like to know how an asteroid works in your chart, we can look at it as part of a natal reading if you request it. It’s important to see ones asteroids in context , therefore we cannot answer questions like “I have Isis conjunct my Sun, what does that mean?”. However we are happy to discuss the asteroids meaning generally.

How very timely! I was going to ask you about three asteroids after a very synchronous event this week!
I was given a homeopathic remedy – Lachesis. After about three days on it – horror of horrors – a massive arachnid on my meditation cushion in my temple! Aaaghhh. Vile. Had to have it removed and transported t another county… but anyway, it is a symbol of the WEB – and Lachesis is the second of the three fates – Klotho and Atropos the others.
So I wondered about using these three asteroids as a significator – perhaps in conjunction with Lead Boy (saturn…)
or other bodies to delineate longevity of situatios – relationships and so on.
This is a nice explanation of the fates as asteroids – ravenesquetarot.com/2011/05/13/the-fates-asteroids-klotho-lachesis-and-atropos/

Where they fall in my own chart is really revealing – especially in relation to one devastating relationship in my history where my natal Klotho was conj the other’s asc. FAte indeed.
I also have Lachesis square Jupiter and very close – 2 degrees conjunct Saturn. I know you suggest 1.5 but it actually makes a lot of sense that it is so close to Saturn in my chart.
Atropos is at 27 Libra and just within 1.5 orb of Neptune in Libra – maybe a life lesson thus is the constant ending of illusions… death by partnership!!

    • uberqueenofwands on September 13, 2011 at 11:22 am

BT the same fateful person had their Klotho conj my Sun Mars and Pluto. Kundalini or bust.

    • Marina on September 14, 2011 at 6:24 am

I love the synchro. Lachese is the measurer isnt it? I have just been reading about Moira, the spinner of fate and all the other dark goddesses in demetria georges book out of the dark. Im itching to get into looking at all their discovery charts. I love how the world talks to us in symbols if we listen. Liz greens Pluto/fate book im onto now. I’m learning to accept fate rather than to keep trying to avoid or bend it all the time. Jupiter rising has too much hubris.
Pluto is our friend… ;) And so are spideys!

      • Uberqueenofwands on September 14, 2011 at 8:31 am

Liz G’s book on Pluto is a masterpiece. Fate is a continuous weave, the spidey weaves across generations, through ages and over aeons and one little tug of the web in one place will reverberate to the another…. Am now wondering about ayahuasca and the idea of an electrified mycelium. My Electric Universe guys say stars are junction points in a universal network of currents… I like!
Liz’s book was hugely valuable to me when deciphering the mysteries and miseries of my autistic daughter. Acceptance of fate is the grace we all have to struggle to attain.
Back to Pluto and the Moirae.

Lachesis is also a snake remedy isn’t it? i was given it once and nearly tore my skin off. Do you have any experience of using astrology in conjunction with homoeopathy? My guess is that it might be a useful diagnostic route to identifying a constitutional remedy

          • uberqueenofwands on September 14, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Yes, apparently its made from snake venom! Its predominantly for left sided symptoms too. I have raised the q somewhere rgds astrology and homeopathy – my old friend astrologer Tadd Mann used it I think – it has to be tied in. I got shafted by a snake so I needed the remedy for the poison!
Lachesis is used for a variety of things – menopause symptoms are oneof them.

          • uberqueenofwands on September 14, 2011 at 3:00 pm

oh – I’m sure it would be excellent for helping to diagnose a constitutional type.

    • lucy on September 14, 2011 at 1:58 pm

spiders come inside this time of year and found your place a cozy spot.

  2. Jamie on September 13, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Did you try asteroid 407 Arachne?

    • Jamie on September 13, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Aha, natally opposite your Lilith, now transiting conjunct your Moon.

      • uberqueenofwands on September 13, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Bleaaaggghh!!! I am surrounded by spiders! My house is full of them!

  3. Rocío Incera on September 13, 2011 at 3:35 pm

    Hi!

I have had hard times with Chiron and Lillith in my 8th house (aquarius). Pholux is also there and Quoar Ixion are in my 4th, but I don´t really grasp them (as I have, by falling, Chiron and Lillith). Ceres makes a quadrate to my Part of Fortune, and this point is quadrate with my north node…

So, I say to my self: keep reflecting! Living and reflecting. Total detachment!

Thank you very much for granting us theses tools to have a close look within!

    Rín.

  4. AlterEgoTrip on September 13, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I can resist no longer, your asteroid and dark goddess entries have forced me to attempt to write, (in a newly created blog) some things on the topic of the asteroids Nyx and Hesperia. It just so happens I am having a solar transit of Nyx, so eventually when I get around to publishing it, it would be timely for myself.

Perhaps I will even make some sense!

    take care!

    AET :)

    • Marina on September 14, 2011 at 6:29 am

Good read! I also have wondered about those Golden apples and Eris. The star Thuban represents this dragon its in constellation Draco up near the poles. Even the fact its so remote as a constellation makes sense. Of course Eris had to steal the forbidden fruit didn’t she! Lilith and the garden of Eden repeats again. And yes who is the big reptilian guarding? That doesn’t want us to awaken. The symbolism is interesting these days in the light of the ICKE!

      • AlterEgoTrip on September 14, 2011 at 7:49 am

Thanks for taking down those links that came up automatically,

I’m not much of a writer and it bothered me to get any attention from this end, but I would rather have your definitions from the other end..

I think that the guardian theme is also there, overlapping the Eden myth, if we want to do that with these various mythologies, there is a very strange picture, that the image of the serpent of Eden may just well be the dragon, laying there sleeping..not tempting.. I just wish I could write things to make sense! Once I start on my own, I go on that dérive but where it went was quite interesting for me too.. I guess I could just be the initial explorer, there are so many who could go deeper into those myths and give them justice, such as yourself.

I just like the duality of discovery when confronting the idea of Eris, that there is more than just this trouble making.. but then my addition of the little machinima there was someone else’s take on it, as if the media in the day and age twisted the story around. I just put that in there to turn it on its head.. and because it was me playing the voice of Eris at the end.

        Thanks for your time :)

  5. Nancy on September 13, 2011 at 5:15 pm

It seems I have north node and lilith conjunct. Sounds interesting now to just find some info on it, any ideas. Thanks

  6. Fernanda on September 14, 2011 at 3:06 am

Hi, Marina! The lil bit I know about astrology is self-thought, however I absolutely love astrology and what you write just calls to me. If the ‘usual’ planets are all so rich and complex already, you can imagine what chiron, lilith, asteroids and such topics do to my brain… lol Still, I can never stop reading about it all!

I always have been a bit bummed out to have a completely empty 7th house (gemini). I do have other empty houses on my natal chart, but being a Libra and having a stellium in Libra (sun, saturn, jupiter, pluto and ceres), I just couldn´t help but wonder about 7th house topics.

After reading your last newsletter, I tried all asteroids, just out of curiosity to see where they would be… and voilá! I found ONE single thing in there: Varuna !! XD

Retrograde, though… And it aspects everywhere:

Trines Sun, Saturn and Jupiter @ 11th
    Squares Pallas @ 10th
    Sextiles Eris @ 5th
    Semisquares Vertex @ 5th
Semisquares True Node, Orcus and Nessus @ 9th
Sesquiquadrates Vesta on the 11th (0°58 scorpio practically on cusp of 12th)
Quincunxes Ixion and Juno @ 12th
    Quintiles Pholus @ 5th

Ever since I saw that, I´ve been trying to find more info to read about Varuna in the houses, signs and aspects, but only found bits and pieces. Could you maybe talk about the most importants of those aspects? And/Or Varuna in the houses/signs?

PS: Sorry about the huge comment!

  7. Marina on September 14, 2011 at 6:06 am

Its great when you find one planetoid that is the missing link. From Zane Stein: “Varuna is the merciful, supportive, and heavenly king of both the gods and humans who controls the physical order of the universe….Keeper of Divine Order, Lord of the Cosmos. He expresses physical power in battle and pro-creative vigor as he upholds cosmic law and a path of order.”
    http://www.zanestein.com/Trans-pluto.htm#CUBEWANO
Scroll to the bottom of this page and you will find three links to further Varuna info – Nick Anthony Firenza’s Varuna page. Denis Kutalyov’s Varuna: Angel or Demon and Mark Andrew Holmes Varuna page.

I wouldn’t worry about empty houses myself. I’d rather have a Stellium any day, better to be a master of one than a jack of all houses! If you want to find out about relationships, look at Venus, her star, the DC and it’s star aspects to the DC and even the ruler of the DC. I still think that has some value.

    • Uberqueenofwands on September 14, 2011 at 8:46 am

And of course there will always be transits in the empty house, visitors come to call!

      • Marina on September 14, 2011 at 1:59 pm

        Good point.
Guess who’s been a guest in my empty 7th house since 2003….Pluto!
He’s been just…erm…well Pluto. In that time: Gave birth, Dad died, Divorced, catalyst relationship into the underworld, then on my return to the surface, met Jamie who turned my world upside down again…in the nicest possible way:)
Only a year or so left I do believe. Be nice to get some peace.

        • uberqueenofwands on September 14, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Comin’ at ya baby!! Cnotracts with Darth Vader..!!!

        • Fernanda on September 16, 2011 at 4:55 am

Thanx for the reply… I’ll try and find something about all those aspects and what Varuna means on the 7th…

I’m sorry about your father and the divorce. Glad you’re in a new good phase of your life, though.

About Pluto, I know what you mean! In my case, it’s been back and forth on my 2th, conjunct my debilitated capricorn moon and square my sun (wich is conjunct Saturn. At the same time as my 1st saturn return)! Talk about oppressive and difficult times… :S Guess it’s all necessary on the long run… But I also agree with you on needing peace.

  8. Ellie on September 14, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I have a cluster at my 18.24 Aries MC consisting of venus 19.33, mars 20.03, BML 21.48, asteroid lilith 19.46 and arachne 20.01 all in aries. These are semi-sextile my NN 21.01 taurus, ceres 21.38 taurus in 11th and mercury 19.59 pisces in 9th.

I find it difficult to know what part of my life defines this part of my chart. I’m very obsessed with astrology and all things relating to the occult, but I think this relates to the strong pluto influences in my chart. Pluto and the 8th house dominates my chart so it’s difficult to see how the rest of the planets and houses operate individually!

  9. lucy on September 14, 2011 at 2:19 pm

just thinking about cerces, in terms of madaline mccann and the idea of motherhood and sexuality…as I read somewhere, not an origional thought but to lazy to dig up source and it may well be from here, so all disclaimers in place the idea of venus conflict cerces and kate mccann having career, social life, glamours mate, motherhood…harvesting death… modern woman wants to rid herself of one

    • Marina on September 14, 2011 at 4:40 pm

I think we have been brainwashed into thinking motherhood is not sexy, that a job is needed, its fulfilling. Well it depends what job hey?
One breadwinner/slave to the system is not enough, so now it’s women too. I just heard the tory government want to cut school holidays down from 6 weeks to 4! Lets tear away our kids from the parents and stick them into indoctrination classes for even longer shall we? Keep us stuck in one country on the treadmill earning money for things we don’t need, so we are chained to our mortgages or debts or whatever… so we can’t broaden our minds further afield. I just want whisk my daughter away in a caravan…. Gripe, gripe!

      • AlterEgoTrip on September 14, 2011 at 5:55 pm

I hear you loud and clear there! So true.

      • lucy on September 14, 2011 at 8:25 pm

well she has you, your grasp of history, interests, the clutter of material, cap/pluto seems to devoir so maybenot so cluttered, but the less than spiritual world we live never breaks the thread. my boys are older and the capricorn bought a scythe. imagine that! impressive blade, he spent a lot of time wacking weeds, saying how great it is.

      • Uberqueenofwands on September 27, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Well being sexy will get you motherhood!

  10. lucy on September 14, 2011 at 4:16 pm

pluto is masculine the father, inheritence, hidden money, vaults, the crucible trial by fire, the expectations of the father through generations…spiders are female..there are male spiders but they are not the web builders and approach the female w/ trepidation, so as not to be mistaken and the submission is all his and he’s soemtimes an after sex snack. the female spider doesn’t need many encounters to make a lot of egg sacks. spiders fighting is really something too as they each dodge each other untill one is wrapped up and bitten.

      terribly sad….

      • uberqueenofwands on September 27, 2011 at 9:18 pm

She cited too much negativity in emails – but I could’t get the whole post. Anyway, as you said, terribly sad.

        • Marina E Partridge on September 28, 2011 at 9:39 am

NOoooooo!!!!!! She had so much good stuff. I think this has happened before and she has come back. I hope so. Why someone with such a wonderful site gets hassled I have no idea. It’s not like she slags anyone off. Life just isn’t fair sometimes…

          • uberqueenofwands on September 28, 2011 at 1:59 pm

well her name Ravenesque has been hijacked as a sort of portal for crap…anyway… awful news. MInd you if you look at the filth people spout on youtube… I believe there are people with nothing better to do than be negative and aggressively so… Well I hope she comes back. As you said, lots of good stuff on her site.

    Marina – a question!!

This asteroid is due to pass us in November – 2005YU55. Its a big one. But it has no exotic name. Yes its going to pass less than one lunar distance. Can we expect an effect astrologically despite it not having a symbolic name? – no meaning ascribed to it??

I put it into astro and it came up in my chart as Henck as 28 Scorpio.??? I did a discovery chart for it – it comes up as An Aries with Cap rising if the chart is drawn for midday in Tucson – where it was discovered. With that combo it has a very cardinal flavour – and maybe something of the energy of PLuto and Uranus.

Anyway, your magnificent expertise appreciated. I just have this gut feeling some of my travel plans might be altered…

    • Marina on November 2, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Crumbs! Now that IS a good question. We can only go on its discovery chart and possibly the news headlines the day it was discovered? I’ll have to get back to you on that. Meanwhile I’m about to go check out Threadwells, maybe I’ll get some inspiration there:)

      • uberqueenofwands on November 2, 2011 at 4:41 pm

If it is an Aries with Cap rising then we can expect the unexpected. earthquakes anyone??

        • Jon R on November 9, 2011 at 10:17 pm

I am noticing with the passing of YU55 some things have come to light:

          - The Italian PM resignation
          - Joe Paterno stepping down at Penn State at the end of the season over the Jerry Sandusky/child molestation scandal, with more people to fall
          - Herman Cain has his own sexual harrassment scandals, yet it seems one or two of the complainants have skeletons in their closets as well, also coming to light.
          - The Iranian Nuclear Crisis (I need to check other alignments to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962… wait… this should be close to a Chiron return for this, right?)
          - Eric Holder and the Fast and Furious Scandal
          - Tremors in Oklahoma, larger than in recent years (5.0 +)
          - DOW Jones just dropped nearly 400, but this isn’t really news at this point in the economic game.
          - US Congress Debt “Supercommittee” may be unraveling (needs verification).

Gotta say, hell of a transit with YU55 with it having passed within Luna’s orbit…

Aries with Capricorn Rising? hmm… That would make so much sense. Namewise: Lucifer, Chaos, Loki, Pandora, Justitia all taken… thoughts? Because IMHO this thing clearly is having an effect.
