Asteroid Lilith

Asteroid Lilith in astrology resonates with the bible myth of Lilith as Adam’s demonised first wife. Since the asteroid is the only solid version of Lilith its manifestations tend to be at the lower chakra level. For this reason Asteroid Lilith has connections to the sex industry and gender politics more than Black Moon Lilith the lunar apogee.

Asteroid Lilith 1811 was discovered in 1927. The asteroid was named after Lili Boulanger a french classical composer and a child prodigy. Her gift became apparent at the age of 2 years old. However, Lili had a short life, she was blighted by ill health from an early chest infection and died at 24 years of age. It is very sad but apt that Asteroid Lilith is named after this eternal youth, frozen in time, a woman who never became a mother.

Lilith The Bible Myth

To understand the meaning of Asteroid Lilith I will first go over the bible myth. Lilith is most famous in Jewish mythology for being Adam’s first wife before Eve. Lilith’s name does not appear in the official Christian bible, only in Jewish apocryphal texts. However, you will see Lilith on the external sculptures of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, between Adam and Eve, holding the apple of temptation. The ancient Jewish texts state that Lilith was made out of the same clay and at the same time as her husband.

Adam wanted Lilith to lay beneath him during sex, but Lilith refused because she said since they were made equal, she could also go on top. The couple continued to bicker about sex positions until Lilith grew fed up and flew away, cursing God. Adam sent some angels to bring her back, but Lilith refused. “Leave me!’ she said. “I was created only to cause sickness to infants. If the infant is male, I have dominion over him for eight days after his birth, and if female, for twenty days.”

The angels kept insisting that Lilith return to Adam. However, she still refused but did concede, saying, “Whenever I see you or your names or your forms in an amulet, I will have no power over that infant.”. Lilith also agreed to have one hundred of her babies die every day, which is why she has a reputation as a baby killer. This account of Lilith’s myth comes from The Alphabet of Ben-Sira, the earliest surviving source of the story, and the conception that Lilith was Adam’s first wife became only widely known in the 17th century.
